The Rhinoceros translator is for designers and engineers who want to use modo in conjunction with the Rhino software from Robert McNeel & Associates. The Rhino translator reads and writes .3DM files and works with the Mac and PC versions of modo software.

Inhaler designed in Rhino

Go Rhinoceros to modo

Enhance the communication of your design intent by rendering images of your Rhino files using modo's multi-threaded rendering engine with its global illumination, ambient occlusion and real-world IES lighting. Create dynamic walk-through and fly-by animations that come to life thanks to modo's ability to model organic interiors, exteriors, or packaging.

Go modo to Rhinoceros

Create alternative concept designs using modo's rapid organic modeling, 3D sculpting and painting tools. The Rhinoceros translator maintains modo materials and intricate surface mesh details, including one set of texture coordinates. Save the resulting files for final technical surfacing in Rhino. View product designs and vehicles created with modo in our Gallery.

Product Availability
updated April 3, 2008

The Rhinoceros translator is available as a beta download at no charge to registered modo 301 users for a limited time.
Upon final product release, the Rhinoceros translator will be available for $99.

The Rhinoceros translator for modo 302 is still in development.

If you have modo 301, download the Beta version from your Luxology Account now.

Product Overview and System Requirements
  • modo 301 is required.
  • The Rhinoceros translator works directly inside modo. Rhino (.3DM) appears as an available file type in modo File > Open and Save.
  • Each purchase of a Rhinoceros translator includes both a Mac and PC versions. You do not have to specify Mac or PC versions when ordering. Upon purchase, you will be able to obtain both the Mac and PC versions of the Rhino translator from your Luxology account.
  • Loads meshed .3DM Rhino files, version 4 and earlier.
  • Includes a sample .3DM file courtesy of Robert McNeel & Associates.
Technical Details
modo Import from Rhinoceros
Rhino .3DM nurbs files should be saved (baked) as a polygon mesh inside Rhino before loading into modo. Units and layers are maintained intact; materials, texture coordinates and as many properties as possible are preserved as well.

modo Export to Rhinoceros
modo triangles and quads are exported as a polymesh to retain vertex connectivity. modo layers and materials and as many properties as possible are preserved. Exported models are scaled in meters. Polygons with more than four vertices are not exported, and the Rhino .3DM format can only support a single set of texture coordinates.

Underlying Technology
The Rhinoceros translator was built with the openNURBS SDK from McNeel & Associates and is provided in both PC and Mac versions for you to use with modo. For more information on Rhinoceros software, please visit www.rhino3d.com
