Note to Mac users: You must have Mac OSX v10.4
or later. |

What is the difference between the Trial Version and the Production Evaluation version of modo 302 that comes with the Spotlight video album? |
|
Both evaluation versions of the modo software have the same features, including the modo in Focus video series which is a broad introduction to modo. But there are some differences outside of the feature set. The Trial version of modo does not include all of the video tutorials, nor the sample 3D content. The Production Evaluation version of modo comes with the Spotlight video, plus all video tutorials and sample content. |
 |
Where do I actually download the modo evaluation software? |
|
Once you signed up for the Trial version or purchased the Spotlight video album, the evaluation versions of modo are available via download. Login into the Luxology website and go to My Account. The software will be accessible under the Product Evaluations. |
 |
Where is the modo in Focus training? |
|
As of modo 302, the modo in Focus training is included with each copy of modo and is installed along with the rest of modo automatically onto your hard disk. If you purchased modo in Focus before modo 302, you will find these videos in your Registered Products. |
 |
Where is the Spotlight video album to be found? |
|
We want that to be always accessible to you. And so we place that here in your Registered Products. |
 |
Do I need to have a 3D graphics card running OpenGL to run the evaluation version of modo? How much RAM? |
|
Yes. You should also install the latest driver from your graphics card manufacturer before attempting to install the modo eval. You should have at least 1GB of RAM and a display capable of running at 1024x768 resolution. |
 |
Do I need to have the PKUNZIP utility on my system to install the modo eval software successfully? |
|
The modo software itself does not require it, but the license files and training materials do. So yes, you will need software that can open up .zip or .bin files. Most operating systems come with software that will “unstuff” the modo license key after you have downloaded it to your desktop. Just double-clicking on the recently downloaded modo file on your desktop should be fine. If the file does not unstuff, try opening the file using Stuffit Expander on the Mac, or PKunZip on the PC. |
 |
Is the modo eval software the “same” as the real modo? |
|
Yes, the eval version of modo has the exact same feature set and is the same
software as the fully licensed version of modo. The only difference is that the
eval software has a license that is timed to expire 30 days after the download.
The eval version of modo also brings up the modo Exploration panel by default,
while modo with a permanent license will only trigger the modo Exploration panel
if you select it from the File menu. |
 |
What are the steps for getting the eval version of modo
running? |
|
Here they are:
- Create a user account on the Luxology website by clicking on the Try Now menu
option or log in to the Luxology website with your existing User ID.
- Go to My Account and click on Product Evaluations on the right hand side
of the web page.
- Scroll down to Step 1. This is the step where you download (using BitTorrent
or a direct Download) the application installer for either the Mac or Windows
platform. You can choose to run or save the installer (generally we recommend
the run option).
- After the download is completed, Run the application installer (which is also
known as the InstallShield Wizard).
- Back on the Luxology website in the My Account section, you can optionally
download clips, content and the tutorial videos. These are not technically required
to get modo up and running.
- The final step to get you up and running is to install your license key. modo
301 can download and install your key for you, or you can install it manually
directly from our website. Go ahead and start-up modo and you should see a prompt
about modo not finding your key. Click on the Get a License button and in the
next window, select Install License from the "I already have a license!" part
of the window. Now hit the Download License button and you will be asked for
your login and password at luxology.com. Make sure you are connected to the Internet!
Finally, just hit "OK'. No need to restart, you are good to go. Should you run
into any problems with this process, you can always install your key manually.
To install your key manually, see below.
|
 |
Manual License installation |
|
**This is only necessary if modo is unable to download and install the license
key for you.
Manual License installation for Windows users: From the My Accounts
Page>Product Evaluations page, download your Windows license. You can download
your license from the same area where you downloaded modo, just select Step 3:
Generate License Key. Select the Windows icon to begin your download. The license
key file will download to your desktop as a .zip file. Just open it up and double
click on the modoLicenseInstall.exe. After the key is installed by this and you
should be able to open up modo.
Manual License installation for Mac users: Note:
You must have Mac OSX v10.4 or later. Simply run modo and follow the onscreen instructions
for installing the license. This will allow you to either point modo to the file
locally or have modo go to our remote server and download their license key for
installation directly.
Alternate method:
- Download the Mac license from the My
Accounts Page>Product Evaluations page and Unstuff the folder. You can download
your license from the same area where you downloaded modo, just select Step 3:
Generate License Key. Select the Mac icon to begin your download. The license key
will download to your desktop as a stuffed file. Unstuff and:
- Drag and drop
the modo license file on top of the "Drop modo license on me.app"
Note: some Mac users have reported problems with Stuffit. Specifically, it
sometimes does not show you all of the files that are present in the ZIP file.
Using the system decompressor will give you an alternate route.
- Download the ZIP file
- Right click on it (or Ctrl click) and choose open with>Other..
- Navigate to HD>System>Library>CoreServices>BOMArchiveHelper – Open

I get a "License Key File Not Found" message when trying
to use the license installer.... |
|
The next thing to try is to drag and drop the license key directly into the
appropriate folder rather than running the license installer. To do this, download
the license key from our website again and drag the .lic file here:
For Windows users:
- Paste the file here: Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Luxology
- Make sure to clear out any other license keys that may already be in the Luxology
folder. If you do not see an Application Data folder, go to your Folder settings
and make sure Show Hidden Files is turned on.
Now you should be able to run modo.
For Mac users:
- Paste the file here: \\Harddrive\Library\Application Support\Luxology
- Make sure to clear out any other license keys that may already be in the Luxology
folder. Now you should be able to run modo.

I am a Mac user and the license installer software still
will not run. Help! |
|
For Mac users, the license installer may fail to install if the user's permissions
are not properly set for their application support directory. Thus you need to
run a "fix permissions" on your harddrive.
To run fix permissions on your Mac...
- From the Finder, select Applications, Utilities, and Disk Utility
- Select a harddrive and click on "Repair Disk Permissions" on the right hand
side (near the middle)
- Do this for each harddrive and try running the license installer again
If that doesn't work, try this:
- Navigate to this area on your computer: \\Harddrive\Library\Application
Support\Luxology (Note: If this directory doesn't exist, create it)
- Right click on the Luxology folder and select "Get Info"
- At the bottom of that tab will be an entry for "Ownership and Permissions"
- Verify that it is set to "Read and Write"
- You can also expand the tab to make sure that you actually own the directory
- Make sure that you "Apply to enclosed items" if you change anything
- If the permissions were wrong be sure to navigate up to the Library directory
and make sure that each directory reaching towards the Luxology directory is
set to "Read and Write" and that you actually own the directory
- Try running the installer again
If that doesn't work.... here is one last thing to do.
- Download the Windows version of the license installer. The license files are
the same for PC and Mac.
- It's a simple ZIP file so just double click on it to open it
- Inside the ZIP file will be a small license file that begins with "modo" and
ends with ".lic"
- Copy the modo (.lic) file to this location on your system \\Harddrive\Library\Application
Support\Luxology

As a Mac user, does it matter which Internet browser I use
to download the eval version? |
|
Yes. Due to problems with renaming files during downloading, we recommend using
Safari or an alternate browser such as FireFox instead of Internet Explorer under
OS X. If you've downloaded the software with Internet Explorer and the file was
named with an .aspx extension, you will have to rename the file with a .dmg extension
before installation. |
 |
When does the 30 day time limit begin? How can I tell how
much time I have remaining on my modo eval license? |
|
When modo is running, click on Help in the main menu bar on top. Then click
on About modo. The days remaining on your modo license are displayed there. The
30 day license begins as soon as you download your license key. When there are
14 or less days left in your evaluation, modo will also inform you of this at start-up. |
 |
Can I get a time extension on my evaluation of modo? |
|
This is not normally done. But if you have a special circumstance, please use
the contact form on the Luxology website to request that someone get in touch with
you to discuss. |
 |
Will the files I create during the eval process load into
the real version of modo? |
|
Yes. The eval version is the "real" version of modo. |
 |
Can I opt out of the emails that are sent to me during the
eval process? |
|
Absolutely. Just follow the instructions at the bottom of the emails. |
 |
If I buy a permanent license to modo, do I need to download
modo again? |
|
No. It is a simple matter of downloading a permanent license key. Or if you
purchased the product from a dealer you can register your copy on our website.
Have your serial number handy. |
 |
Will modo work with a WACOM tablet? |
|
Yes, many modo functions like painting are pressure sensitive. |
 |
Can I run modo under Boot Camp on my Mac? |
|
While this will work fine, it is unsupported. |
 |
How can I uninstall modo? |
|
Run your modo installer again, and you will see an option to uninstall. |
 |
Will Luxology sell or give my email address to other companies? |
|
We do not sell or provide information for our community members. If we have
an inquiry from someone (e.g. a magazine editor) who wishes to contact you, we
will contact you individually first to see if it is OK for them to reach you. |
 |
What are some other websites where I can get help, sample
scripts etc.? |
|
Go to the Community section of our website and you will see several websites
that may be of interest listed there. |
 |
Is there a printed book available on learning modo? |
|
Yes. Look in the Training Materials section on the Buy Modo webpage of our website. |
 |
What is BitTorrent? |
|
In some cases, we make files available for download via BitTorrent – a
peer-assisted delivery platform maintained by BitTorrent, Inc. Specifically,
it is designed to smooth the distribution of large files (including digital movies)
by trading pieces of the file amongst a group or swarm of peer computers. Luxology
offers BitTorrent as an alternative to the direct Download to provide a more
efficient way to download certain files. |
 |
What do I do if I have lost my password or user id for the
Luxology website? |
|
On Luxology website, go to the Sign In page, and click on Lost User ID? Or Lost
Password? on the right hand side of the page as appropriate. |
 |
Does the eval version of modo include imageSynth? |
|
imageSynth is a separate product from modo for creating seamless textures. It
is not included with modo or the evaluation version of modo. |
 |
Can I evaluate modo on both my Mac and my Windows computer
during the same time period? |
|
Yes, feel free to try modo on both platforms. Remember to download the appropriate
version of the software and license key for each platform. |
 |
Is it OK for me to do paying, production work using the
evaluation version of modo? |
|
Yes. Of course we would appreciate you purchasing a permanent license in this
instance but there is no restriction we impose. |
 |
Can I apply the $25 I paid for the evaluation version of modo to a future Luxology purchase? |
|
Not exactly; let us explain. First, the $25 is the same price we sell just the video album for. More to the point: from time to time, we will make special offers during the evaluation period which do in effect give you credit for that initial fee. |
