Modeling a Backpack

Training Video for modo 401

Modeling “soft goods” is a key skill for product design visualization. Industrial Designer Adam Ohern shows you how to create a complex model of a backpack, including all the interesting details, like cords and stitching in our newest modo Training Video. The methods demonstrated by Adam are applicable to a wide range of textile-oriented designs, including handbags, gloves, flexible athletic gear and soft recreation equipment.

Modeling the Human Eye

Training Video for modo 401

In this new modo video tutorial, Luxology’s own Andy Brown demonstrates how to use modo to model a human eye and the surrounding facial structures. This area of the human face is complex, being the confluence of many curved surfaces flowing into each other, and re-creating it is an opportunity to learn new modo skills. Andy demonstrates key aspects of using modo, from polygon modeling, UVing and hair to sculpting, painting and rendering.

Subdivision Surfacing

Training Video for modo 401

The Subdivision Surface Modeling video tutorial from Luxology’s Andy Brown is all about how to approach the modeling of hard surface (vs. organic) model with multiple interlocking parts. We start by exploring efficient ways of creating initial stand-in geometry, which will not only be an invaluable tool for testing the design of the object, but will also act as a starting point for the final model and other people in the production pipeline. We then explore the decision making processes involved in tool section and workflow as we construct part of a “mech” using Subdivision surfaces. We then use basic animation rigging in modo to make sure the model has adequate clearances for someone else to animate.

Rotary Aircraft Engine Animation

Training Video for modo 401

In this tutorial, we take a close look at many of the new animation set-up and rigging tools in modo 401. These tools allow us to rig and animate mechanically-based objects using constraints, inverse kinematics and dynamic parenting. When finished, the entire engine rig can be driven by a single keyframed channel. This is an ideal tutorial for anyone who wants to dig into what has now evolved into very capable animation system within modo.

Rapid Visualisation
and Prototyping Tutorial

Training Video for modo 302

Design is a process that requires continuous revision of an object. This Rapid Visualisation and Prototyping Tutorial shows how modo can be used as an intuitive part of a designer’s toolset. The subject is a portable MP3 player which is created in modo using a variety of techniques in modo, including subdivision surface modeling, sculpting and 3D painting. A physical prototype of the object was produced using a Z Corp 3D printer during the development of this video album.

Concept Car Modeling and Rendering

Training Video for modo 302

When designing with 3D software, an effective approach is to work quickly with sculpting tools to arrive at the basic form which you then refine with more accurate, technical tools. The key to success is an unimpeded workflow, so in this Concept Car Modeling and Rendering Tutorial we look at how to create a concept car in modo with an emphasis on structuring the task in a way that will aid the design process.

Seahorse Modeling and Sculpting

Training Video for modo 301

The seahorse has some of the most unusual characteristics of any fish in the sea. Its ribbed and often semi-translucent body is a perfect example of what we at Luxology called a “structured organic” shape. Learning how to model one in modo is not only a great introduction to sculpting, it is also provides guidance on when to use traditional modeling and painting techniques that complement sculpting.
