SIGGRAPH Recap
The annual gathering of the graphics tribe – the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Conference – took place in Vancouver, Canada from August 7th through 11th. Luxology and modo were very much on display in both the NVIDIA booth, as part of the Sketch Match competition, and the AMD Booth, where modo was featured in the “Fire Drill” Speed Modeling Contest.
Seneca Menard, Lead Technical Designer at id Software, talks about the titles he has worked on (Quake III Arena, Doom 3 and most recently Rage and Doom 4) and the different areas he has worked in, including characters, lighting, textures, map objects, level designs, game play and scripting. He explains why he likes to use modo for game level design and mentions some of his favorite tips and tricks:
“We at id have been using modo since day one, most recently using it for the majority of the work on Rage and Doom 4. We use it not only for the majority of the models being used in the game, but also for the majority of the levels as well, because we really enjoy the precise control we get over our level work that would just be impossible to do with only brushes or modular models.”

Lucasfilm and Sony Pictures Imageworks Release Alembic 1.0
VANCOUVER, B.C., – August 9, 2011 – Alembic 1.0, the open source project jointly developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Lucasfilm Ltd. was released to the public today, it was announced at ACM SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Alembic is the computer graphics interchange format developed by the two entertainment giants last year and focused on efficiently storing and sharing animation and visual effects scenes across multiple software applications. It was designed to handle massive animation data sets often required in high-end visual effects and animation, which are routinely developed and produced by companies such as Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic and Lucasfilm Animation Ltd. and Sony Pictures Imageworks. The studios each saw the need for a tool like Alembic, something that would fit within existing pipelines and allow for customization at the facility level without impeding the ability to share work.

Luxology Ships Model Bashing Kit for modo 501
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., – July 27, 2011 – Even in the analog era prior to the advent of affordable computer workstations, model making with pre-manufactured plastic kits of planes, cars and boats was a popular hobby. “Kitbashing” was the term used for the practice of creating one-of-a-kind models out of components taken from multiple commercial kits. Luxology’s new Model Bashing Kit provides modo users with a similar capability to quickly construct highly detailed virtual forms for science fiction or industrial visualization projects.
Spaceship Modeling
We love spaceships! You could argue that CGI was invented to make spaceships, but whether you believe this or not there’s no denying that CG spacecraft have been the stars in many iconic productions, from battle sequences in Babylon5 to opening shots of Star Wars Episode 3 and more recently Avatar. For many CG artists, these epic scenes really get the blood racing. In this modo modeling tutorial, Andy Brown pays tribute to the CG spaceship and has some fun while creating a very special vehicle.

Contest Winner
Our latest contest is a little different and there is plenty of room to be creative. We want to tip our hats to some Internet people we admire. We here at Luxology are sort of a fringe group and we have chosen another group of five people who seem to share our geek qualities. So we’d like to get some creative license going and model these good people. As you create these images, we will be posting updates and sharing the love with our Twitter and Facebook communities as we want *you* to get some exposure as well.
What is your motivation? Some pretty awesome prizes!
The winner will receive a medium Wacom Intuos4 tablet, with Wacom’s compliments. In addition to the tablet, the winner will get access to the beta
of the next version of modo. I am not sure when the beta will be available and yes, an NDA will be involved, but hey, you’ll get to play with the next big version of modo before anyone else. Plus, you’ll get the new modo upgrade when it is released.
The contest will run from now until Friday, June 10, 2011 5 PM PST.
Two entries have already garnered a lot of attention...

CG Architect
modo 501 review by Neil Hayes
“...modo is an increasingly strong contender for AEC related work, especially given its great workflow, price point and the quality of the images it produces (e.g., see the Gallery on Luxology’s website). In closing, if asked if it’s worth upgrading from modo 401 or if you should consider modo 501 for Arch-viz work then I would say, “Yes” on both counts and without hesitation.”

Develop 3D
modo 501 review by Josh Mings
“modo 501 is a massive update to a program that mixes modelling, rendering and animation. More than ever, modo is becoming the program that does it all.
The effort put into the updates of each tool and tab in 501, even down to the help system, make this version an excellent upgrade option for those on 301 or 302 and, given the speed increases, a definite consideration for those on 401.
The most substantial are features easing the strain of modelling and smoothing the process of rendering. The bump map updates bring the ability to add much more detail at a fraction of effort and poly count. The implementation of Pixar subdivision surfaces is making this possible and providing many more options than ever for sculpting and shaping your model.
If you’re coming from a mechanical CAD background, modo is a different workflow with different terminology. However, the rendering interface and options will help you become oriented with the software while having an incredible amount of options available to create photorealistic images.
With modo becoming increasingly easier to use, it’s clear that Luxology is focusing its development efforts on the user or, at the very least, having them twitch repeatedly from a rendering they just created.”
