(2010-07-29) Special Siggraph edition: Stu Maschwitz
Luxology President Brad Peebler interviews Stu Maschwitz, co-founder / CTO of The Orphanage, and now software director of Red Giant software.
About this modcast:
The multi-talented Stu Maschwitz explains his guerrilla approach to film-making. Stu was an original part of the legendary “rebel Mac unit” at ILM and has continued his fearless approach to production. He founded The Orphanage based around “this idea that you could become a film production company with full visual effects with stuff you had bought with a credit card at your local store.” He loves to use off-the-shelf tools but doesn’t hesitate to write an new one (think Magic Bullet) when he needs one. In this interview you can hear him reveal secrets like how realism actually sucks, and how shooting and editing live action can accelerate your development as an animator.

(2010-07-28) Special Siggraph edition with Vincent Laforet
Today we are joined by Pulitzer Award winning photographer Vincent Laforet. Vincent has been on the cutting edge of photography his entire career and is now leading the charge for HD DSLR and digital cinema.
About this modcast:
Luxology President Brad Peebler interviews Los Angeles and New York-based commercial photographer Vincent Laforet.
One of the world’s great photographers “pays it forward” in this wide-ranging interview that goes back into his early career as a 15 year old working in film labs in Paris. A self-proclaimed gearhead, Vincent talks about what really goes on behind the scenes (think carabiners and pulling 3-4 G’s) in shoots like his recent aerials project over New York City and how he rediscovered – and helped to revive the art of – tilt/shift photography. Vincent discusses his move from shooting stills to shooting and directing moving imagery, and the massive viral reaction to his very first film, “Reverie” that propelled him to the forefront of HD DSLR cinematography. His amazing “Beyond the Still” contest just the Bronze Lion at Cannes. Vincent discusses his idols, his favorite gear, the “next big leap”, his process for selecting his best shots and insightful tips gained from over 20 years practicing the craft of imaging. Here’s one; never delete a shot because your opinion about what is “best” will change over time.
“Most of my discoveries in my career have been the result of dumb luck, or exhaustion or refusing to do the same thing the same way.” - Vincent Laforet

(2010-07-27) Special Siggraph Edition with John Knoll
Sit back and enjoy the sultry sounds of the illustrious John Knoll as he spins tales of software and VFX. Enjoy!
About this modcast:
Luxology President Brad Peebler interviews Academy Award®-winning visual effects artist and modo user John Knoll.
John starts out the interview recalling his interesting “archaelogical” experience in recently demoing some pre 1.0 PhotoShop software for an Adobe video. After that blast from the past, John explains the role of an FX Supervisor and how he approaches the job (always trying to carve out parts of each project that he can personally execute). He goes deeply into his first use of modo in production (rendering mannequins for the romantic comedy Shopaholic in 2009). He then explains ILM’s role in the Avatar film, noting in detail where modo was used. When the topic of stereo (and particularly stereo conversion) comes up, John’s views on the value to the consumer experience are “not sugar-coated.” He is currently working on Rango – ILM’s first animated feature.
“We ended up needing a smaller crew than we thought we were going to need because of how efficient it is to work in modo.” – John Knoll

Touch screen devices in our pockets, data in a cloud, instant on device compute. Yes! It's finally the future. But I still need my flying car.
