Grist!
Report from Andy Brown's visit to Royal College of Art
![]()
Andy was recently invited to the Royal College of Art to attend an exhibition of Work-In-Progress from the Animation department of the Royal College of Art. This event was called Grist!
Here is his report:
I met with Tommaso Lanzo in the Queens Arms pub before the event. It was good to catch up - the last time we really talked was way back at Siggraph in San Diego in the aircraft museum. Remember that!![]()
He teaches modo on the Design Interactions course. It’s so cool that modo is available on the course, and it really demonstrates how versatile modo is.
The course is a Masters degree that takes people from various backgrounds and encourages them to explore design in a very experimental way. Consequently the line between design and art is very blurred, which results in some very interesting creations.
The show was packed with hundreds of very young and very creative people. I hate them! I was young and creative once!
The event was showing work in progress, so it was really showcasing the ideas the students were grappling with rather than showing any finished work.
A number of things caught my eye.
I loved a piece of work where the artist had taken a digital map of London and changed the code so the map was re-mapped to match the relative dimensions of the London tube map . It resulted in a wonderfully distorted view of the capital.
The most haunting piece was a wire sculpture that was made from metal with memory. So when an electrical current was passed through it it moved. The result was a lighter than air nest of wire that pulsated as if it was alive. I could have watched it for hours.![]()
The most fun piece was a machine that read the movement of your face and converted it to music and images, so as you blinked or twitched you were entertained with what can only be described as a psychedelic eye test!
The architectural section was very interesting. There were some amazing pieces including buildings that seemed to be inspired by food.![]()
I was very interested to see the automotive design area. A lot of the work reminded me of the work of Harald Belker and Scott Robinson. I might be wrong but I found it interesting how perhaps automotive design is being influenced by concept artists like Harald and Scott. A case where the line between industrial design and entertainment design are becoming more and more blurred, and how incredibly well equipped industrial designers are for a move into the entertainment world, and visa-versa.
So a great evening, in a great place. If you’re into architecture and your're in London then go to South Kensington as the buildings are insane.
Hopefully I’ll be invited to the final year show. It should be impressive.
Cheers,
Andy Brown

Cornell University Genetically Engineered Machines team wins global award
modo helps team visualize synthetic biology project in an international competition
![]()
An enthusiastic group of undergrads at Cornell University used modo at the international Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition recently. Their concept was a "Biofactory" and the judges liked it enough to give it the "Best Manufacturing Project" award which was 1 of 10 international awards, in a competition with 160 participating teams from 30 countries.
Dan Levine is the CUGEM Animation Team Lead and a Mechanical Engineering Student at Cornell. He explained the role and choice of modo for the project:
"Modo gave us an intuitive and natural way to develop our animations and understand the general workflow of modeling and animation in 3-d space. We learned a software and chugged out some quality animations in the span of a month in a half. University of Wisconsin called us the "Pixar of iGEM". Had we used Maya, I very much doubt we could have accomplished this task."
